2020health Press Release Response to Health Select Committee Report

2020health issues a response to the 2nd Report Session 2010-2011 of the House of Commons Health Select Committee.

Julia Manning, Chief Executive of 2020health said, “This is a timely reminder that the NHS can make savings through improving productivity rather than just cutting services. The NHS has a huge budget which has doubled over the past 10 years, and management posts have proliferated, but there has been no significant benefit to patient health in the UK.”

“Just because there is no precedent to reducing costs at the scale required doesn’t mean that we can’t. However we have two major concerns;

We are not taking demand reduction seriously enough. There are no penalties for poor health choices leading to obesity, respiratory disease, STIs or alcohol related illness. This level of preventable demand is unsustainable.

Added to this we desperately need a strong lead from the centre on improving the quality and reducing costs of care using technology. We would like to see some determined action towards propelling telehealth into mainstream care - with government addressing the reimbursement and governance blockages - the National Commissioning Board giving leadership to local consortia about making it happen at scale - and the Royal Colleges giving it their full support.”
